Passwords

Being an Information Management graduate, programmer working for an IT/BPO company and being in a relationship with an Anti-Virus/Security Administrator I know how important passwords are. But it was only during our company induction that I knew of any security breaches/hacking done by Filipinos. It was also only when I joined this company that I started practicing the safe way of using/creating passwords and I’m applying at home what I’m practicing at work.

Here are just some of the guidelines that I follow when creating my password:

  • A minimum of 8 digits
  • Usage of alphanumeric and special characters.
  • A combination of upper and lowercase letters.
  • I check the strength of my password using The Password Meter

It is also not advisable to have/use one password for all your online accounts. Since I have so many online accounts, it’s too hard to memorize my passwords. I write down my passwords but I keep them in a secure place, meaning they are not saved on my mobile phone or any document on my computer.

You know what they say… It’s better to be safe than sorry :)

Goodbye WinXP, Hello Ubuntu

I followed her advice and switched to Ubuntu. I’ve had the CD for awhile now, but I was afraid to make the switch. I still have a lot of things to learn with this new OS. Being a newbie I accidentally deleted one panel/taskbar and panicked when I couldn’t see my running applications. Haha! Turns out I need to add the “Windows List” to my taskbar. That’s all fixed now :)

I need to read more information about Ubuntu. I’ll start by reading her blogs about Ubuntu :) I hope this is a start of a good relationship with this OS. :P

Too bad though I wasn’t able to do a backup of my Firefox bookmarks :( Oh well. It’s gone now, nothing I can do.
