The Philippines was hit again by a storm. This time it hit Metro Manila during the wee hours of the morning. I woke up at around 2:30AM this morning because of the sound of the tree branches that keeps on slamming on the neighbour’s roof. I couldn’t sleep since then as I was terrified because of the strong winds. I opened the TV and tried to find out how strong this typhoon was. Minutes later the TV went off, brownout! So I then tried to go back to sleep but still can’t sleep well. When 4:30AM came our aunt who was sleeping downstairs called me up and told me to move my car because she feels its not safe since my car was below our avocado tree. Some branches were already falling to the ground. So I went down and saw the damage so far… The wind was really strong. Last Friday, my site was down. I found out about it as I tried to access my site the “Error establishing database connection” error showed up instead of my customized theme. My mood all throughout the day was sad because I wasn’t able to do a backup of my site (database, themes, plugins, posts & pages) I thought I’d be able to do a backup via MySQL but when I was at the MySQL control panel, I find out that the database is gone 
So I had nothing else left to do, I felt much more sad because of it. I didn’t know how I’d be able to get a hold of my database any more. Blog entries since August 2008 is gone forever.
Saturday came and I received a plurk message from my host. She told me that my site was back up, so I hurriedly searched for WordPress plugins that would help me back up my site. I found two plugins, downloaded and installed them and soon enough I have a backup of my site. Yay! 
Just in case my host decides to switch hosts then at least I don’t have to start from scratch in building my site.

Note to self: Always do back ups. As much as possible do back ups weekly. 
Two Saturdays ago my boyfriend was interviewed for a project of his friend’s friend. Since it was a Saturday, which is our day together I tagged along in meeting his friend and his friend’s friend 
I was with them during the interview and one of the questions was “What advice could you give to the graduating students?”
If I was asked my advice would be: “Experience is the best teacher.” I know it doesn’t sound like an advice but with my situation right now this is what/how I relate best with. It may sound so cliché, but I do believe that experience is the best teacher. Every time we wake up to a new morning also comes new experiences. And each experience(s) will make us a better person. We might not realize it but our everyday experiences made us to who we are and where we are right now. We’re growing up into the kind of person we want to be because of our everyday experiences.
Each experience(s), whether good or bad teaches us a lot of things. We learn from our bad experiences or past mistakes. Trials make us stronger, tougher and wiser. We realize that the easiest solutions may not always be the best. And this helps us to grow and if we are faced with another trial we would know how to handle them already. If we do the same mistakes again, then it just shows that we have not learned from those mistakes.
A person can know a lot of things, be obsessed in getting high grades, be a perfectionist but can’t pass the lessons in life or be a fool when it comes to dealing with his/her life. Life is not perfect; life is not about getting high grades. The best lessons are those not found in textbooks.
I followed her advice and switched to Ubuntu. I’ve had the CD for awhile now, but I was afraid to make the switch. I still have a lot of things to learn with this new OS. Being a newbie I accidentally deleted one panel/taskbar and panicked when I couldn’t see my running applications. Haha! Turns out I need to add the “Windows List” to my taskbar. That’s all fixed now
I need to read more information about Ubuntu. I’ll start by reading her blogs about Ubuntu I hope this is a start of a good relationship with this OS.
Too bad though I wasn’t able to do a backup of my Firefox bookmarks Oh well. It’s gone now, nothing I can do.
Thank God for the Internet, you can now research almost about anything in an instant. That is what I did when I received a text message from someone I didn’t know. This person is asking for my help to come here in Manila because apparently she/he has a job offer in San Miguel. I didn’t reply to him/her because I’m sure she/he won’t stop texting back and pleading for help. I knew right away that it was a scam. So I typed marie 21yo bacolod on Google’s search bar and found a lot of forums/blog posts about this text scam.

I visited her/his site and saw the “diploma” she/he posted. She/He graduated cum laude from University of St. La Salle. Wow! I don’t think a cum laude will be this desperate? Another thing, the blog/forum posts I found dated back to last year but this person who texted me today is still 21 years old and a fresh grad! *LOL*
How can people do things like this? Why don’t they do something useful from their time and not trying to scam other people. Why don’t she/he just look for an actual job instead of using her/his time in scamming others? I just hope no one falls for these kind of scams anymore, like what they always say “Walang manloloko kung walang magpapaloko.”
I just bought a car cassette adapter from CD-R King. The reason why I bought one is so that I’d be able to play my Creative Zen while on the car. For some reason my car’s CD player is not working. It’s been broken for quite awhile and I haven’t had the time or the money to have it fixed. I also feel that it’s not that important to have it fixed since it’s only the CD player that’s broken. I’m also planning to buy a new stereo and just replace the stock/old stereo that came with the car. But then again, I don’t have the money. Well, I do have the money but I just don’t want to spend on something I feel is not that important. I also have a lot of things I’d like to buy but I still need to weigh things and order them by my needs.
Here’s my list:
- New laptop – I still don’t know what I should get. But I have my standards, and the specs should have at least 2GB of memory. I’d like to have a laptop where I could use Photoshop without slowing down and also maybe be able to do my work/programming. The last part I doubt it will happen. I always say that I’d do my work at home but that never happens.
- DVD player or portable DVD player – just so I could play my DVDs and have my TV series marathon
- Gaming console – Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been a gamer. I remember the time when we had a family computer. From the moment I wake up, I turn on the family computer to play Mario Bros. I’m still thinking if I’d get a PSP or a Nintendo Wii.
From my list, I doubt it that I’ll get all of them. But my target is the laptop, that’s what I really need. Since this laptop I’m using is on the verge of dying. First the battery is already dead, so it’s just as if I’m using a desktop. And the most annoying thing about this laptop I’m using is how it’s frequent freezing. It takes awhile as well to open some applications like Firefox or Internet Explorer. I’m hoping I get to buy one by my birthday which is May of the next year. I just need to save up; I hope I do save enough money by then.

My first cousin Steph asked me to disseminate this online so that others might know and safeguard themselves from this modus operandi. The criminals involved had disguised themselves as police (hopefully, it was indeed just a disguise); even their van had police markings. They were armed with an armalite.
The crime was attempted just meters away from her house inside their village in Sucat, Muntinlupa. [Erratum: I first wrote "Parañaque" because from my understanding, their village straddles the boundary between the two cities. My mistake and not my cousin's. My apologies.] By God’s grace, she survived the ordeal.
Please pass on and spread the word; maybe members of the media can check on this, too. Understandably, my cousin was traumatized by the event and I admire her for gathering her wits together to share her ordeal with the public.
